The Jasper County Board of Commissioners has approved of the purchase of the former group care home located at 825 Eatonton St. in Monticello by the Development Authority of Jasper County.
The property will house the Jasper County Health Department and serve as a community resource center for Jasper County.
The newly-purchased property includes six acres and the two structures on the lot. The primary 8,800 square foot facility will house the Jasper County Health Department’s services, provide room for expanding public health services and offer ample space for community partners. The secondary 1,100 square foot building has the potential to house additional community partners, activities and services. This new space will allow the residents of Jasper County to access improved resources to meet their evolving healthcare needs.
The facility allows public health to introduce new services to the community. Potential additions include mental health services, substance abuse counseling and telemedicine services, which will allow clients to receive treatment and interact with healthcare providers in Macon and other locations without having to travel. The additional acreage included with the purchase provides the opportunity to develop community wellness programs, a walking trail or a community garden.
“The healthcare needs of our community are growing, and we have to grow with them if we want to continue to provide effective services,” said Christa McMillian, Nurse Manager of Jasper County Health Department. “In our current building, we don’t have room to keep up with the changing nature of public health. The new location will give us plenty of space to thrive and interact with our clients and partners from across the county.
The health department’s current building was built in 1953 and has had only minor renovations since its construction. Jasper County is exploring the options of repurposing or selling the building, located at 336 East Greene St. in Monticello.
Jasper County Health Department and North Central Health District would like to thank the Board of Commissioners for approving the purchase of the property. Jasper County Health Department staff and the county’s Board of Health are excited for this opportunity to provide expanded client care in an updated, modern medical facility located centrally to Jasper County and the City of Monticello.
Jasper County Health Department and North Central Health District will provide regular updates throughout the process of relocation. County residents will continue to receive public health services from Jasper County Health Department at its current location until services are moved.
